PROF. BISWAJEET PATTANAYAK
Ph. D., D.Litt., D.Sc., FIMA
Formerly Distinguished Professor IIM, Indore & Lucknow
Founder & Director

A passionate promoter of creativity and commitment, institution builder, management guru and an orator par excellence Prof. Biswajeet Pattanayak has very rich experience of almost three decades with exposure to various facets like teaching, research, academic administration, industry and entrepreneurship.

With Ph.D. and D.Litt. in Organizational Behaviour, D. Sc. in Management Sciences, and Fellowship of All India Management Association (FIMA) to his credit, Prof. Pattanayak has been a distinguished teacher in the area of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management. He has taught at some of the premier institutes of the country like Indian Institute of Management (IIM) - Indore, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) - Lucknow, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, and Indian Institute of Bank Management (IIBM), Guwahati.

Prof. Pattanayak is more a mentor than a teacher; and as a teacher, his focus has always been on ‘learning by a student’ than on ‘teaching’. His teaching is always peppered with real life case studies and projects. He has been an innovative teacher. To cite but one example, he used, for the first time in India, an Oscar nominated block-buster movie ‘Lagaan’ to teach management (leadership, team building, negotiation, conflict resolution etc.) in the class rooms of Indian Institute of Management, Indore way back in 2000, which earned him the sobriquet of the ‘Lagaan Professor’. He had achieved the rare distinction of becoming a full professor of IIM at the early age of 35 and the director of a national institute at the age of 37.

He is adept in academic administration, having worked earlier as the Director of Indian Institute of Bank Management (established and promoted by Reserve Bank of India, the central bank of the country, which he converted to a national level institute from a regional one), and the Vice Chancellor of KIIT University in Odisha. He has also received wide acclaim by turning around a moribund private academic institute to a deemed-to-be university.

Prof. Pattanayak has worked for very prominent organisations like Steel Authority of India Ltd., (SAIL – a public sector behemoth and the largest steel producer of India) as occupational psychologist and ESSAR (an Indian MNC with presence in shipping, steel, power, telecom, project management and retail) as the Group HR Head. He established Asian School of Business Management at Bhubaneswar in 2006 to bring affordable quality education to the doorstep of the students, and has been leading it as the Director since then. He always bubbles with enthusiasm and new ideas, and is known for his entrepreneurial leadership. In fact, he had become an entrepreneur at the tender age of 22 as the Managing Director of B P Polymer Pvt. Ltd. He edited and published two literary magazines during his school days. He was also an accredited journalist during his college days.

Prof. Pattanayak has been appointed by the Hon'ble President of India as a member on the Courts (the highest bodies of Governance) of Central University of Rajasthan and Guru Ghasidas Central University, Chhattisgarh. He is an elected member to the Council of Management of All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi. He is a member of the Committee for Formulation of Higher Education Policy of Govt of Odisha. He is also on the Board of Studies for Management of Utkal University and Odisha State Open University.

He has to his credit 85 research publications in national and international referred journals and 24 books published by well-known publishers like Prentice Hall, Sage, Excel Books and Bloomsbury. His book ‘Creating Performing Organisation' has been a global best seller of Amazon.com. His papers are published in reputed international journals like Organisation Development Journal (USA), HRD International (UK), International Journal of Psychology (UK), International Journal of HRD & Management (UK) etc. Six scholars have been awarded Ph. D. and five others are pursuing their doctoral work under his guidance and supervision. He has successfully completed eleven research projects funded by the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India and various industries

Prof. Pattanayak has presented a number of papers and also Chaired sessions both in National and International Conferences. He had conducted the ‘Lagaan Workshop on Team-building & Leadership’ (based on the Oscar nominated movie Lagaan) at the 62nd Annual Convention of International Council of Psychologists from 3rd to 6th August, 2004 at Jinan, China which was attended by educationists from across the globe. That workshop had received the highest credit rating (that is, 4 out of 4) of American Psychological Association. He has conducted a number of Management Development & in-company programmes for senior and management level executives for more than hundred reputed organisations. He has also undertaken several consulting assignments for many companies including the World Bank.

He is associated with many professional bodies like American Biographical Institute (Advisor to the Board of Research), International Council of Psychologists (Ambassador & Area Chair, Eastern India), International Association of Applied Psychology, American Psychological Association, All India Management Association (AIMA), Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD), Indian Science Congress Association, Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Science (ISABS), National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM) and National HRD Network (NHRDN). He is a Certified Evaluator of ACBSP, USA.

The excellence achieved by Prof. Pattanayak in teaching has been acknowledged by different awards bestowed on him like the prestigious ‘International Teaching Excellence Award, 2016’ conferred by ACBSP – the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, USA (as one among the top ten management educators of the world, and the only one from India), ‘The Career Award for Young Teachers, 2000’ by All India Council for Technical Education, Ministry of HRD, Government of India, ‘The Award for Best Teacher in Organisational Behavior and Human Resource Management, 2005’ by Deccan Herald (a prominent daily of India), ‘The Award for Best Teacher in Management, 2008’ by Deccan Herald, ‘The Best Professor in HR Award, 2008’ by the Dewang Mehta Foundation ( a leading philanthropic organisation in India working in the area of public service) etc.
